Z-VisionTM
The Most Advanced All-Laser LASIK

Z-VisionTM is a refractive surgical procedure that combines the most advanced femtosecond laser technology for creation of a corneal flap with the precision of Custom Wavefront technology to measure and treat imperfections in your eye and correct your need for glasses.

Z-VisionTM  is not comparable to other technologies--it is better!  Unlike the Allegretto laser, Z-VisionTM utilizes true Custom Wavefront VISX technology. And the flaps created are better than with the Intralase because the Ziemer laser uses less energy to create a smoother, more precise surface for a quicker visual recovery.  Combine that with the total personal care offered by our staff -- no bringing in a surgeon from another part of the state, and no technicians or optometrists doing your exams and post-op care -- and Z-VisionTM is hard to beat!

Offered to you only at Charlotte Ophthalmology Center for Sight by William Branner, M.D., Brandon Whiteside, M.D. and Boyd Vaziri, M.D. this combination of the Ziemer Femtosecond LDVTM laser and the VISX Custom Wavefront S4 Excimer laser provides you with a more gentle experience and a quicker recovery of your vision.  Z-VisionTM is extremely effective at reducing or eliminating your need for glasses.

Z-VisionTM is for those who:

  • want to eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses
  • prefer the most advanced All-Laser LASIK procedure to correct their eyesight
  • have not had a significant change in their vision for one year
  • have no health issues affecting their eyes & are at least 18 years old
  • have mild to moderate amounts of astigmatism, myopia and/or hyperopia
  • prefer to have their surgeon provide their total care -- pre-operative evaluation, all phases of the procedure, and all post-operative visits

What to expect on surgery day:

Z-Vision TM does not require a hospital surgical facility. It is done in our office surgical suite. First, you will be given mild sedation with an oral sedative like Valium, then your eye will be completely numbed with powerful eye drop anesthesia. When your eye is completely numb, an eyelid holder will be placed between your eyelids to keep you from blinking during the procedure.

Then lying comfortably on your back, you'll be asked to look at the microscope light. Dr. Branner, Dr. Whiteside or Dr. Vaziri will use a probe to gently mark your eye. Then your eye is held in position with a gentle suction device for about 20 seconds while the Ziemer femtosecond laser is used to create a thin flap on the cornea.  Air bubbles will form which blur the vision but this is only temporary and painless.  You will feel a slight pressure and the flap will then be gently lifted with a probe.  The VISX S4 Star excimer laser will be used to correct your need for glasses by reshaping the cornea in areas determined by computerized and customized Wavefront measurements from your pre-operative exam.  An advanced computerized tracking and alignment system keeps the excimer laser centered on your cornea despite any eye movements that may occur during treatment.  Some patients elect to have only one eye treated to give them monovision.

Soon after the procedure, you will go home and relax for the rest of the day.  The following day Dr. Branner, Dr. Whiteside or Dr. Vaziri will see you to check your progress. For the first couple of days, you may experience some scratchiness in your eyes, or excessive watering. This rapidly improves and medications can be taken to relieve any discomfort. Normal activities are generally resumed within a day or two. While many patients see improvement in their vision immediately after the procedure, it usually takes a few weeks to several months for the results to be fully realized. As with other vision correction procedures, you may experience some discomfort (dryness) and night vision abnormalities (glare or halos) for a few weeks following Z-VisionTM.

Realistic expectations:

The decision to have Z-Vision is an important one that only you can make. The goal of any refractive surgical procedure is to reduce your dependence on corrective lenses. However, we cannot guarantee you will have the results you desire.

Z-VisionTM has been approved to correct a wide range of eyeglass prescriptions.

Serious complications with Z-Vision are extremely rare. Z-Vision is a precise and effective procedure, but like any medical procedure, it does have some risks. After a thorough eye exam you and Dr. Branner, Dr. Whiteside or Dr. Vaziri will determine if Z-Vision is an option for you. If you are a good candidate, you will be given additional information about the procedure that will allow you to make an informed decision about whether to proceed. We will be sure you have all your questions answered to your satisfaction.
